My childhood's home I see again,
And sadden with the view;
And still, as memory crowds my brain,
There's pleasure in it, too.

O memory! thou midway world
'Twixt earth and paradisee,
Where things decayed and loved ones lost
In dreamy shadows rise,

And, freed from all that's earthly, vile,
Seem hallowed, pure and bright,
Like scenes in some enchanted isle
All bathed in liquid light.

As dusky mountains please the eye
When twilight chases day;
As bugle notes that, passing by,
In distance die away;

As, leaving some grand waterfall,
We, lingering, list its roar-
So, memory will hallow all
We've known but know no more.

That's a side of Lincoln I have never seen before. Interesting.

Yes, I concur on that. Steve S.

As above, and I live just a few miles away from his childhood home.

I've never seen that side of Lincoln either. Good find. I guess Lincoln had pretty much same feelings about childhood, life and death that most of us do, but in between he sure made things happen.

I am not really a fan of Lincoln at all. His policies resulted in the death of over 600,000 Americans.
