A long cruise - Cartagena, Spain - part 9

Phew! This is the last part of the Cartagena photos. We arrived before 8 a.m. and are leaving at 5 p.m. It was a long day. We saw Fuensanta Sanctuary, Murcia's Cathedral, Murcia's Casino, Roman Theater in Cartagena and other places, too.

I usually have a pre-written thing for the message, but I will just fly with this. Very short notes.

As I stood on the deck and looked around the Cartagena's harbor, I noticed this boat. All the way from Punta Gorda, Florida!

This vessel's color made it really stand out!

I did a lot of research on many of the photos on this posting, but I was not able to determine very much.

I did discover that there is a cemetery at the top of this hill.

Cartagena's harbor is a well protected one. It is the primary port of the Spanish Navy. Because of Cartagena's location, it has many things that might or might not be defensive in nature.

Based on some of my reading about the history of the city, these might be shelters that were used during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. I cannot verify that, though.

As we are leaving the harbor, we passed this series of solidly built structures that appear to be defensive. Their age and use I could not determine. Some are more obvious than others. I have close ups of each of these buildings.

When we were in Tangier, Morocco, I saw many fishing boats leaving for the day. Their crews were busy doing things on deck and the gulls were following closely.

Now it is late afternoon and fishing boats are returning the Cartagena's harbor. I saw many, but I like the way the colors are in this one.

When I downloaded all 3600+ photos in December, I went through and kept about 2800. I put captions under each one so that this old man would be able to remember all the whats and whens and wheres.

The caption I put for this one, "Cartagena last view." Another wonderful port of call in Spain. So much to see and do and only one day to do it. Since I don't do well with long flights, I will assume that I won't be back to this part of the world. One more port in Spain (Cadiz), but that comes after Gibraltar.

We get a bit of a break. We don't arrive in Gibraltar until noon. We have no tour organized, it will be a day of simple exploring. After Gibraltar, we arrive in Casablanca the next day! This traveling the world can be tiring.

The last picture really makes a statement as the end of something. As if you could sail of into a neverending empty ocean.

The orange-red boat looks to me kind of official. Just thinking back to my 2 years daily view of New York harbor, it reminds me of the fireboats.

According to the side, it is a maritime salvage boat. It would not be lost on the water with that color.

    Here is a different shot.

    Excellent photos and narrative, Jim.
In a way it is a small world. Take the photo of the cemetery up the hill. I saw pretty much the same scene in Hong Kong, They simply did not have any more room to to bury anyone on the flatland so they headed for the hills.
About the pic of the boat with the seagulls following. I've seen the same thing here in Half Moon Bay, CA many times.

But you are the one who took the time to take the pictures, and shared them with us. Thanks.

    I forgot this one.

I saw this as we got near the old town portion of Cartagena. I have no idea how this worked. Where is the head? There is something in front for donations, but I did not see anyone contribute.
