The gardens are winding down

Oh we've canned all the tomatoes we want and still get more slicers for the table than we can use. Keeps the non-gardening neighbors in tomatoes. Eaten all the eggplant in every possible way to eat it and there still are several that will go in the compost pile..All the pickles we want are already made but the asian cukes are outdoing themselves, neighbors are getting those too. To me, the tomatoes don't taste quite as good as the earlier ones though. Imagine the 14 days of 100 degree heat didn't help, All the plants look a little sad and dejected and come to think of it, fall begins in less than 2 weeks. About time to order firewood. Have some planting of grass seed to do. good time to do it. Front lawn is a mess, had to have the sewer line from the house to the street replaced and the damage to an otherwise nice lawn was pretty bad. Oh well just another almost $5,000 dollars we hadn't counted on spending. Back to the original topic, the asters are showing off nicely butt everything else looks tired. Guess I do too.

If you would live next door, I gladly would take the excess. I am not the only one complaining about the bad tomato harvest, some of the people at the farmers market had equally bad luck this year and my 3 eggplants had ONE blossom which fell off.
Water and sewer lines can be a pain, especially if the experts decide that one does not know where the line goes.

It sound like you had a great garden season. Wish I was one of the recipients of your bounty, since I had puny crop this season.
I agree that the taste in tomatoes could be because of the weather. They are very "temperamental".
Yes, my summer garden is winding down also, but the Orange and Lemon trees are putting out new blooms and fruit, they will be ready in December/January. I planted some asters for fall color and I'm looking to plant some cool season crops.

My major "Harvest" come from the share in the CSA and in the Farmer's Market. I had some great tomatoes, big slicers, planted in tubs, my soil is getting so poor since there are no more horses and the water use is dicey because of the dry weather and the heatwaves. Joann and I "pay forward" giving our surplus eggs to friends and neighbors - not necessarily the same people, but it all goes around.

lilo, glad you mentioned CSA , that is my favorite agency. I do food drives and christmas donations.
They are actually hooked up with a real "farm" here in the valley, where people can buy "shares" and pick up fresh food and eggs.
It is a miracle that there is a farm left in the valley and that it is used for growing food for families.
