One of the reasons I wanted to move to Guatemala was for the slower, simpler pace of life. I've had no problems doing without a television, washing machine, dishwaher, shopping malls, etc. But I admit I did miss having an internet connection at home. A few days ago we got a great new toy-a portable internet modem! We have a cell phone as there is no land line to our place. Until now I've had to walk or take pickups (the local public transportation)into town to get online. But we recently found out about a handy little gadget finally available in these parts. We borrowed one first to try it out and decided to purchase one for ourselves. It's a USB thingy, about three inches long that plugs into our lap top computer and gives us internet access at home!!!! Well, sometimes. It doesn't always work and the reception is sometimes very slow. But for two days now I've been reading news, researching various subjects, and listening to music online. Tonight I'm going to try to get my favorite bluegrass show from a public radio station back in Detroit. And, over the next week I plan to catch up on all the emails that I owe people over the past few months. This is a small thing but I'm very excited about it, it's going to make a big difference in my ability to keep in touch with all the folks I left behind.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who would give up TV to keep internet service. Not forced to do so yet but if it ever comes down to it, that's the choice I would make. Of course, my decision would be an economical one. I retired a year and a half ago and pared expenses down considerably. So far I've been able to keep both but would not be heartbroken to give up satelite TV if necessary. Welcome back gardenkat. Don't be a stranger.

YAY! I did a small landscaping project at Sheron's house and she still has your blue pot of daylillies alive and well- the peonies are well also! . I am glad you will have more convenient internet. I would choose internet over television also. |

Double YAY. I can only imagine how great it must feel to be able to connect from home with the rest of the world. All the hostas you gave me are thriving and even though some of them are supposed to be small, they are really getting large...and all of them just beautiful.I of course think of you all the time. Sounds like you made the right decision to go there.

Thanks for the welcome back. It's good to be here! Although this USB thing has its limits. I was able to connect yesterday morning but couldn't get a connection all afternoon or night. But a little internet is better than none. Krista and Marda- thanks for the plant update. I like knowing that my former plants are now growing in the gardens of friends.

wow...that's really cool (that there is an option for addicts like me). Internet definitely beats tv any day. My family spent a couple weeks in rome, and I didn't touch the internet for two weeks, which felt like a lifetime. How long did you last without it?
