A Christmas lesson - true story

Christmas past Mark looked at all the packages under the tree and wondered which were for him, wondered what was in the boxes, waited impatiently for a box to be handed to him. This year it was different, he had gone to school and learned to recognize his name, written on all things that belonged to him. It was a very powerful feeling to know what he owned.
So many boxes under the tree. When he had a chance he would check out what box said "Mark" on it and imagine contents.
He found a package for Mark, took it into his room, ripped it open and discovered a pair of mans socks in it. Must be a joke, he thought and tossed the paper and socks under his bed.
Oh, the next day! A shoe-box sized package, a wonderful thing: a toy automobile! The hood was clear, so the engine could be seen, and when wound up, the engine worked! Mark was delighted and amazed, played with the toy when everyone was asleep.
Next day, while in school, Mother cleaned the room, discovered sox and wrapping, label said "To Dad from Mark". Aha, busted! The car-toy was discovered in his closet. Now that was serious.
Mother and Dad had a discussion; Dad said: "He needs a spanking" Mother asked "What about the car?" Dad said "Well it is a gift from my employer, let it him keep it"
Mother disagreed, she pointed out that Mark may well believe the spanking was worth it as long as he had the toy, the wrong lesson in many ways. After more discussion a decision was made. Mark was confronted, told Santa Claus was consulted and advised the only right things was to pass the present on.
There was a Birthday Party in the Neighborhood for Mike, a boy Marks age the car was the ideal gift.
Mark and Mike were not good friends but that did not matter.
As far as Mother and Dad knew, neither Mark nor his sisters ever were tempted to prematurely handle, rattle or open gifts.

True, but the name has been changed to protect the not so innocent
