Work commenced in 1986 and it was completed in 1993, with more than 2500 workmen on the site around the clock.
This is a view of some of the outside archways. I wanted it to be more symmetrical, but I am not that good at those kinds of things.

Mosque courtyard holds 80,000 while another 25,000 can be accommodated inside. I have not been able to determine if that many worshipers have been there at one time. There is minimal parking.

I admit that I had never been inside a Mosque, so the prayer rugs were fascinating to me. There was one grouping where the patterns were identical and others were it appeared to be more random. There was a worker deep-cleaning the rugs.

One should remove shoes when inside the Mosque.

This is interesting, this is splendor and never been used. It is a womenâÂÂs bath. It does have ports for allowing stem to enter. It is a must-see on the tour.

The tour groups are kept to less than 20 and the Mosque provides guides. Our guide was a woman; I agonized about offering a tip, having been exposed to the society there.

You can get a better sense of the size of the Mosque. The roof is retractable. They have had to undertake significant restoration, even though it is considered new. It is thought that the concrete is being eroded by the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean.

Interesting pictures. Before you mentioned it, I thought it was several centuries old. Maybe the sea air, which erodes it, also makes for the antic feeling off the stones.

Mosque interior, looking up. If I recall correctly, women are allowed to pray upstairs only, never on the main floor. Our tour guide covered her head for only part of the tour. I was puzzled by that.
