Remembering Today's Date

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I was nine years old and didn't really understand the significance of what had occurred--except to know it was awful and terrible. President Roosevelt's message to the nation was magnificent, and parts of it still are engraved in my mind.

To most of today's younger population, this is 'ancient history', but there are still many of us who remember.

The missus and I visited the Arizona Memorial several years ago.

I was about a year old and living in Oslo, Norway, so I have no memory of this day.
However, when I moved to the US and learned the history, I visited the memorial in Hawaii and I got more of an understanding of what happened.
I'm not sure the memorial tells the story of what really happened, it so pristine and linear.

We took a sea plane ride and passed over the Arizona Memorial. There are still petroleum products oozing into the water there.

The Arizona. The one place in Hawai'i I don't like. My heart breaks when I'm there. It's all so sad. Infamy indeed.
