Fact file - Finding a lost dog

Knowing your dog's personality type can help the search

Friendly dogs are more inclined to go directly up to the first person who calls them.

Depending on the terrain and population density where the dog was lost, these animals will generally be found fairly close to home or will be picked up by someone close to the escape point. Gregarious dogs are often "adopted" by individuals who find them. (Get those fliers EVERYWHERE! This is where it's really important to get the Dog Decetive or another service who will call dog enthuists, Vets, etc)

Dogs with aloof temperaments are wary of strangers and will initially avoid human contact. While these dogs can travel a great distance, they eventually can be enticed with food and patience, typically by experienced rescuers who know how to approach and capture a wary dog.

Often these dogs are not recovered for weeks or months after their escape and are thought to be homeless, abused and unloved because at this stage their physical appearance deteriorates. They may also become injured.

Panic-stricken dogs are more inclined to travel great distances and are at a higher risk of being hit by cars.

If they bolt after being startled by a loud noise, such as fireworks, they may take off in a blind run and go for miles. They may even run away from their owners.

It may be necessary to use other dogs, such as a "magnet dog," to get close enough to capture them or use baited humane traps.
