Because they are parasites. The do not raise their own babies, and frequently theirs are larger than the host bird, and they kick the host bird's baby's out of the nest, or else they take all the food and starve the smaller birds.

Marian - When I read the material at the link gb provided I understood your initial comment better - they do sound like nasty beasties! (I don't know a lot about birds and can only identify the really obvious ones....)

Yes, I agree with Marian, it is not unusual to remove the cowbird egg!
