Judy - You have a lovely garden. Thanks for sharing these. Your phlox and day lilies seem to be doing just fine with some shade.

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Great luster on the hosta foliage, I have never seen hosta foliage that was not 'dull' in the reflective sense of the word... if that makes any sense!

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Botanicat thanks for your nice comments. The front part of the bed with the daylilies gets alot of afternoon sun which is why I don't have my hosta in the front. The spot with the phlox also gets quite a bit of sun.

The hosta foliage in that one picture fledgeling is wet so I guess thats why it has luster.

Thanks, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

I love the first picture, it looks like such an inviting place to sit and relax.

 o
RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Thanks Michelle, It is a nice place to sit but those chairs are our beach chairs. LOL!! I never managed to buy me some nice comfy chairs to move around so we just used those all summer. I hope to buy me some pretty wrought iron ones to leave out in that area somewhere. Thanks again, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

love you gardens. Your design with the hydrangea and lilirope(sp?) is very pretty. I really need to stop buying one of everything and by several to make more of a design. Do you plan your design before you plant??
ALso, your lawn is gorgeous. That's one thing I envy. What type of maintnance do you do to your lawn?

SOOOO pretty!! :)

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

You are so sweet hurlee!!! My husband is in control of the lawn. He won't let me touch it. If I want to enlarge my beds I sneak and do it while he is at work! LOL!! I am trying to stop buying several of each thing just so I can get more different things. If you only knew me you would know I do not design anything before I do it. I do try to think about it a little now because I have moved so much stuff around. We did take a lawn sample to our local county extension office for them to do test and tell us exactly how much lime and fertilizer to use and when to use it. Mass plantings of things are georgeous but I really don't have enough room for it. I am new to roses this year so it should be interesting. One more thing about the grass, in the hot, hot months of summer July and August it starts to die out but picks right back up October. Its fescue and it loves cooler weather.

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

I use the same type of chairs in our garden, they are light weight and I like to move them as the views change in the garden. I love your area with the pot can you tell me what the plants there are?

Your pictures brightened up my day. :)

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Karyn, Your so sweet. We bought those chairs at the beach last summer and it is nice to move them around like you say when things change in the yard. They are nice comfy chairs and I love the high backs. My plants in the picture are hydrangea to the left and azalea to the right. Then theres some impatiens, hosta and ivy growing towards the front. The azalea didn't bloom last year since the late freeze got all its buds and the hydrangea only bloomed a few blooms. That spot really needs more sun so my hubby is cutting down some old trees to get some extra dappled sun in there. Thanks for looking. I hope a lot of people post pics on this forum this year. I love looking at everyones flowers. Thanks, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Judy, Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. The hostas almost look like they've been waxed. I'm going to go home and wet mine to see if I can get that effect. You are right, this forum doesn't get near enough activity. I'm partly to blame for that as I lurk around much more than I participate. I'm going to post some photos, when I figure out how, that is. I saw, and commented on your clematis as well on that forum. Do you ever visit the Cottage Gardens forum? Seems to be more activity there. Again, your photos are just beautiful.

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Thanks blondi!! I usually visit the rose forum and forget or just run out of time to come to the perennial side. I go to the cottage forum sometimes too. Theres so many to visit just not enough time now that everything is coming up in the yard. Email me if you need help posting pics. Its real easy when you get used to it. I like taking pics of the flowers and hosta after a rain or when I have watered. Everything looks so pretty when its wet. Thanks again, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Judy,

Thank you for the ID. Of course thats what they are, they look a bit different than mine do. But then again that doesn't surprize me either. I was just down in your neck of the woods, Waycross, GA and everything was in full bloom and so much larger than I'm used to seeing. Would you mind if I saved that picture? I have an azalia in full bloom right now and just got an Annabella hydrangia. Mine is about the size of a pencile so it will some time before it's as nice as yours.:)

Here is some wisteria in my Dad's yard in Waycross the beginning of April. Wish I could grow some here in NH it smells deliciouse!
Wisteria

This if from my raised rock bed that sits along side our driveway. There is actually a culvert for spring run off under this and drops off behind it into the woods. This was taken last summer, July or August, roses don't bloom here until then :(. It's Cottage Rose that is finally bouncing back after the propaine delivery driver ran it over last summer when it was in a bucket on the side of the drive. The other is New Hampshire Purple Geranium and is also coming along nicely, this was new last year too. I'm thinking about what else to add to this bed. It is in full sun, does anyone have suggestions?

~~Anyone else have a nice view to look at? I'm sure
Judy wouldn't mind if we moved her chairs to sit and look if we asked nicely....

Have a great day everyone.

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Karyn, Hope you enjoyed your visit here to Georgia. We have been getting lots of rain lately so hopefully we will not have as bad a drought this year as last. I wish I knew which hydrangea and azalea those were in my picture but I have a bad, bad habit of just plunking them in a hole and going on to the next thing to plant. You are more than welcome to save which ever picture you want to. Your dads Wisteria looks beautiful. I have seen some about the size of small trees I would like to try and grow. I have a Cottage Rose I bought almost three years ago. This year it is blooming very, very good. I would go bonkers if one of our delivery people ran over anything of mine. I am gonna post ya some pictures I took of my Cottage Rose this year. How big is your flower bed you are wanting to add to? Might be a little easier to suggest a few things you might like to add. Feel free to move my chairs anywhere you like. The dang bottoms of them are about to bust through so I will have to break down and go get me some more. Thanks, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Judy,
Your cottage rose is beautiful, one of my favorite roses. I can look at your's until mine kicks in. And I do know what you mean about the names of things, I most of the time don't bother to even try and remember. I know Annabella because I just bought it and it is the name of a cat I once had and NH Purple well, because I live in NH. :)

I had a nice visit with my Dad while in GA we didn't do much other than sit and visit. Warm felt good!

I would love some help with my rock wall. It is about 10' long x 4' wide. It has sun all day after 10am. here it is the best I could get with help from my Granddaughter who lives with us, the love of my life and we are stuck at the hip, where I go she goes, and wouldn't have it any other way. Her name is Daisy.

Here is another couple.

rock wall
and here is a lame looking map I made...
rock wall map

The pink yarrow on the left is pretty and I like it until it flops over onto the rose. I tried the wire hoops last year but guess I don't know how to use them. The hoops floped over too. Think I need something else. The iris have been there a year and have never bloomed but I do like the look of them. I think I would like something tall towards the back to go with the mallow that will not flop. Don't want a bush or tree in that bed...I know it's overgrown with weeds all around it and will look better when I have the time to do some weeding, mulching and brush cutting. The silver solar lights are going to move elsewhere, my sone gave them to me for mother's day and just stuck them there.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I would love to look at this bed and see it full so there is no room for weeds to grow and cover up the mulch which I realy don't like at all. THink I would like to see something trailing down over the front of it, and tucked into the gaps in the rocks. Last year I tried the wave petunias without much of an impact.

Thanks again for sharing the cottage rose...

Karyn

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Karyn, Your grandaughter is such a sweetie. I love the name Daisy. I wonder if you could put another rose bush in there that gets tall but you would have to stake it somehow or put it in a trellis. Do you plan on leaving the plow in the middle? You might could put a trellis planter where its at and put a rose in side it or some kind of plant that gets tall and the trellis helps support it from flopping over. I am really not good at designing flower beds. I plop them in the ground and if I don't like it I just move it. Kinda getting tired of that though so I try real hard to put it where I know I will like it. I don't know alot about plants that might trail over. I would love to have a raised bed like that but don't have one yet. Your iris might be planted to deep. My mother in law has always grown iris and she keeps the tops of the tubers showing and not covered with dirt. And definitely no mulch on top of them. I tried to pretty up her bed one year and almost killed a bunch of her iris. Luckily when they started turning brown I scraped back all the mulch. Bad, bad mistake. I should have listened to her. Sorry for not being much help. Hopefully someone else on here can give some suggestions. Or maybe on the discussion forum since it seems more active. Good luck and I am sure whatever you choose will work great. Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Karyn, I was also wondering about daylilies. Do you like them? They would be good to fill in here and there to fill some gaps. I love them. Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Hi Judy,

I would love to move that plow, DH loves it as it's original to the farm, I keep trying to tell him he should put it away I don't think the weather is all that good for it but he likes it there.

Lilies are a great idea, they bloom most of the summer here are quite tall and tougher than roses.

Here is Distant Drums my VERY FAVORITE rose, I planted 4 more of them this spring. To me they are worth the extra work needed to over winter them here.
Photobucket

I did move some of my hosta closer to the azalia over the weekend and am on the lookout for impatients and an ivy like yours, both annuals here...not today though, had to put a coat on it's only about 50 and windy. A quick trip back from the barn this morning. :)

your Cottage roses are so pretty and healthy looking, mine has very thin canes and short it dies back to the ground every winter.

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Gosh Karyn your Distant Drums is gorgeous. I would love to have that one. Hoping one of our local nurseries gets one in one day. If not I think I am going to order it. Your plow looks neat in the garden so I would leave it unless you want more room for plants. My Cottage Rose was real spindly the first two years I had it and it still kinda is but I am hoping it will get fuller as it gets older. It is blooming alot more since its getting alot more shade. Getting my husband to cut down any trees is like pulling teeth. I love the trees too but I want a bunch of pretty flowers too. Please post a picture when you get your bed the way you want it. If you are like me though it never really gets done. Thanks, Judy

RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Judy~I love your pink daylilies! Do you know the names of the ones you have? Thank you.

 o
RE: need some activity over here!!!!

Thanks prairiegirlz, The smaller one is Strawberry Candy but it is more orangey pink than pink to me but it really doesn't show that color in the picture. The other one was from my mother in law and I don't have a clue what its name is. So sorry. Judy
