Lupines in zone 5/6

In answer to a question about the suitability of lupines in zone 5 or 6, a picture of the lupines near our pond. They have done so well, they self sow replenishing themselves. The key to establishing a good bed of them is to sow in situ.

Are lupines particular where they are planted? You mentioned near your pond so evidently it is somewhat moist there? I'm Wintersowing some of the Russell and blue lupines so I hope they germinate and do well.
