| I planted this perennial by seed several years ago and have collected the seeds and started more in other parts of my garden. I could swear that the package gave a common name like "fire flower" (something of that sort) plus the name "pyrethrin" or "pyrethrum." That stood out in my mind because I recognized it as the name of the plant that the natural insecticide comes from.
But when I googled "pyrethrin" or "pyrethrum," all I found were daisy-like flowers, not at all like mine. Finally I did a search for "@flower+red" and eventually found this pic: http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~trevtu/images/agh Red Flower.jpg My perennial looks exactly like that except the flowers are a bright Chinese red (which reinforces the "pyre" part of the name). Unfortunately, the site where I found that pic is in Chinese (I think), so I couldn't find the name. Anyone know the scientific and common names of this glad-like, brilliant perennial? And if anyone wants a few seeds, let me know. Genie |

| Thanks, twixand dud. Armed with a name (which is much easier to google than a description is!) I was able to verify your identification. Here's one of the red ones I found via google: It's a slightly different red than mine but definitely the same flower. I am still pretty sure my seed package called it "pyrethrum" or "pyrethrin," and I can't figure out why. (t may have also said "Crocosmia." The package listed at least 2 names. |

| This pic is of one the same color as mine. It says the plant is called "Crocosmia" or "Montbretia." http://www.mygarden.me.uk/Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora Mrs Geoffrey Howard another view.jpg These perennials do well in full sun or partial shade. One site where I found it had it listed as "flower of the month" for August. My experience, in the Portland, Oregon, area, is that it blooms in July. Here is "crocosmia lucifer" - just like mine: |
