dianthus maintenance

hi, haven't found too many good articles or youtubes on dianthus care.

i have several, they have been in for 2 years now, and i have noticed that they grew using a mat that lays on top the mulch. (i thought there were getting bigger like an ornamental grass does until i looked closer)

anyway some of them are really turning brown and crispy. they didn't do this last year.

is this part of their natural cycle or are they likely dead?

thanks
