Balloon flower problem?

My ballon flower is very tall. Is it going to be this tall every year. If so, I'll need to move it, so it can be staked upright.

Yikes. I cut mine back in July to about a foot tall. No flopping, denser, more compact plant.

Is that after they have bloomed? Mine,I think, started budding around then. Also, can I cut them back now? Without effecting the bud for next yr.

Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, they will be that tall every year, when they bloom. That is that particular cultivar's growth habit. Perhaps pinching them back during the spring will keep them more compact, but will probably delay blooming.

Yes, you can cut them back, after blooming, just deadhead them by removing the spent flowers and stalks down to a point just above the leaves. Do not remove all the foliage until they turn yellow in the fall.

Next year put grow through stakes or a tomato cage over them as they grow to corral them and hold them upright. Remember they emerge from the ground later in the spring.

The past few years I've done as SayPoint has done...cut them back several inches in July. It's sturdier, more branching and I don't need to stake it. This really helps.

Wow, what a nice bunch of seed pods in that pic :)

I think you might want to try a more compact form if you really want them short, although pruning may well so the job on these too :)

I have a bunch of Astra seedlings (from Parks) growing under lights right now that have buds after 10 weeks (planted 9-21-05)and the tallest of them is 6 inches with a big fat bud :)
