Does anyone know what perennial this is?

I have had this plant for years and have lost the ID tag and cannot remember what it is. Does anyone know? It must be 9 ft tall or taller and has hundreds of purple flowers on top. The picture quality isn't real good but it might help. The flower color is more purple than is shown. The individual flower petals(?) seem to be tubular with a thin white stamen(?) and are not flat and are a little pompom-like.

Thanks,
J

Maybe a type of ironweed (Veronia)? There was a thread about this plant not too long ago.

Here is a link that might be useful: ironweed as ornamental thread

Thank you, I think that might be it! I'll go do a search and see what I come up with.

Definitely Vernonia, Marcia is right. I grow it next to my barn. Great for August wildflower bouquets!

It definitely is vernonia and I do love it. I grow it in the back of the garden next to the fence. It definitely adds appeal!

This looks like butterfly weed to me. It grows wild here. Butterflies are crazy about them.

The flowers of butterfly weed are orange.
