Wow, so much for winter! We have had no snow to speak of, and now I see daffodil shoots coming up. I can't believe it. What will happen to them if we do get snow? Granted they're in a sheltered area where some old chrysanthemums still have colour. But still... is there any hope for them if we do get blasted with the usual weather?

I was just talking about this the other day - it's been quite mild and mild weather expected through this week, was hoping the bulbs wouldn't start to poke through. But, nothing can do about it....it's just disappointing to wait for the display then have the flower buds get wrecked by a hard freeze :0(

I saw them pushing up through the dirt this afternoon. Considering they've been growing and thriving "through all kinds of weather" the past 25+ years, I'm guessing they know (better than I) what they're doing.

Crazy, isn't it? I've had them up for weeks - they pushed up back in December or maybe even late November, and then just kind of stopped. Same with the oriental lilies. The daffs I'm not worried about; the lilies I am a bit more concerned with. I guess we'll see! Dee

Spring bulbs usually have stems growing underground at this time of year; usually they take another month to finally break the surface, but in January a daffodil bulb planted 8 inches deep would have grown shoots that are only an inch or two away from the surface. So it is not really far off from where it is supposed to be. I actually started seeing a few daffodil shoots as early as November this year, but last time I checked about a week ago they were the exact same size they had been in November, apparently in suspended animation until the temperatures are right for the leaves and stems to begin elongating more quickly.

Hardy bulbs often show some foliage during warm spells in winter. I haven't seen that affect survival or flowering. On the other hand I am still eating lettuce from the vegetable garden, which is a sure sign of Climatopocalypse. :)

Thanks for the assurances, all. It's so weird how we're treating this mild weather with such suspicion, lol. Not to say I'm not enjoying it but I don't miss my gloves hat scarf boots slush mat snow shovelling ooops better not jinx it...

I have daffodils in bloom and am enjoying them. Lots of foliage and buds. Other bulbs are sending up foliage and have been for months. Some is normal and some is because of the crazy weather we've been having.

last week i saw a handful of snow drops in bloom in a park in the middle of the city (which acts as a heat sink). Now that we are down to 12 today... they might not look so good anymore.

The worst thing here is that buds on tree peonies begin to open. I lost 2 young plants due to this some years ago. What to do?? Apart from that daylilies begin to grow, even the dormant ones, eranthis opens, and Helleborus orientalis made flower buds.
