Does anyone grow this in z.5 or 6? I am a huge fan of calycanthus venus and hartledge wine (I grow a few of each)but i never thought the camellia-like sinocalycanthus was a possibillity.I fell in love w/ it yrs ago at the UBC Botanical Gardens. thank you.

RE: Sinocalycanthus in Z.5 or 6?

Hi Mindy,

I have both the 'Hartlage Wine' and 'Venus' as well. They both used to be called Sinocalycalycanthus, but I've recently seen them listed in some places as just Sinocalycanthus. The nursery link below still shows them as I had known them. I also found this online about the crosses:

"Richard Hartlage, then an undergraduate at North Carolina State University, performed a series of reciprical crosses between Sinocalycanthus chinensis (Chinese Sweetshrub or Wax Plant) and Calycanthus floridus (Carolina Allspice or Sweetshrub) to produce what was considered a new bigeneric hybrid that was later named ×Sinocalycalycanthus raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ "

I've never seen Sinocalycanthus chinesis offered anywhere. It would be interesting to give her a try!

My shrubs do fine in Z5. I find 'Hartlage Wine' to be more robust than 'Venus', although 'Venus' was purchased as a much smaller shrub so I'm waiting for it to come into its own. It's also in more shade so I may move it in a couple years. What conditions have you found yours do best in?

Mine all come from Broken Arrow in Ct.
Mine grow and flower a long time in part shade, w/ ave. soil.I plan to put one in full sun as an experiment. Aren't we lucky? What a great, giving ,and tolerant shrub! Easily in my top 5, maybe 3, shrubs! You too?
best,
Mindy

I grow it in z7, so really can't comment on its hardiness to zone 5. However, I can comment on growing conditions. I grow it in a part sun situation w/ average soil that gets squishy wet during the winter and spring, but dries out during the summer. I think it would be a great plant for a rain garden. The deer don't bother it, and if it ever gets out of bounds, it can be pruned immediately after bloom. Here's a photo of the flower.

Mindy, I would easily put 'Hartlage Wine' in my top 3 shrubs! LOVE IT!! 'Venus' has not put on her show yet, but I'm patiently waiting! I think she's in a little too much shade though. Guess I'll put that on my list of shrubs that need to move!

Spazzycat, that is a gorgous flower! And you bring up a good point that deer don't bother it. I love the huge, glossy green leaves on these shrubs and am happy that the deer don't!

for the financially cautious, I see Bluestone is offering Hartlage (sp?) for $10.95. I hear their shrubs are very small, but if you have the patience and a place to grow them on it might be worth a try.

I just stumbled upon the specific plant Mindy mentioned for sale at Avant Gardens in Dartmouth, MA. I think I'll have to add this one to the garden.

Calycanthus sinensis aka Sinocalycanthus chinensis grows here in Z6. I've known of at least three plants.

I am in a zone 4 but have quite a number of Z5 shrubs and perennials that survive very well... I was thinking of taking a chance on the Hartlage wine for a semi shaded part of a woodland garden... do you think I should dare?

hi kari, such a great plant.my suggestion is to make a call to broken arrow nursery in haddam ct. and ask them- andy brand is head of the nursery and would know best we have 4 venus and 2 hartledge wine, thanks to them. grow very fast; did fine in this horrid drought we had this yr.(no browned edges like so many woodies have now.)
best,

Very pretty. I've thought about getting some of these too. Do Hartledge Wine and Venus have scented flowers? I know the wild ones sometimes do, and heard that depending on the source from where they're propagated from, some of them may or may not be scented. I would sure like to get scented ones.

I have both in my "growing on" beds. They could be planted out, but I don't know where to put them. I think letting them be and planting in spring might be a better idea.
