I have always wanted to grow astilbe, though it has never worked for me. This year I got some seed in a trade and would like to do it right.
Any advice please?

I've had great success with Winter Sowing these. If you are not familiar with this method, simply head over to the Winter Sowing Forum and read the FAQs. I now have so many Astilbes that they have become a mainstay of my yearly plant sale. :O)

Here's a link to one of the discussions about winter sowing Astilbes with photos in the post.

Here is a link that might be useful: WSing Astilbe

Hey Tiffy
I am a wintersower for the firsttime this year, basically because of you.
I just became a member of garden web last fall, a read a post of your plant sale and was inspired to grow my own perennials.

I decided to winter sow the astilbe, they are a lovely pink.

luckynes13 - I'm growing astilbe from seed for the first time this year too, and I'm winter sowing it. Let me know if you want more seeds--I have lots and lots still. Good luck to both of us!

sure I would like some more, the more I plant the better chance of success I have. Thank you very much.

I grew astilbe from seed last year. I bought a pack of seeds (from Thompson & Morgan, I think), sowed them on the surface of sterile seed starting mix and grew them under shop lights. I probably started them in mid to late February, 10-12 weeks before last frost date. Grew them under lights for about four to six weeks. When they had 3-6 leaves, I transplanted them into plastic cups and grew them in a windowsill with little direct sunlight for another month or so. Maybe they would have grown faster with more light but I have very little sunlight in my house and I wanted to reserve it for the plants that really needed it.

They were still very small when I planted them outside, but they were tough and grew slowly and steadily all summer, even in shade.

may try wintersowing some this year too.

I sowed a packet of Astilbe seeds, but I made it to germinate only 4 of them!!!!!

I don't know what I am doing wrong. I sowed them in mid-January and today it's the first of March and these four seedlings are absolutely super tiny! It is going to be Spring soon here in Texas and I was hoping to plant them in the raised bed when it is going to be warm in about 10 days. I will do fine with 4 plants, but I do not want to lose them! What can I do to accelerate the growth?
