Kniphofia (Red Hot Poker) hardiness and experience

Posted by coolplantsguy z6 Ontario (My Page) on

What has been your experience with Kniphofia or Red Hot Poker? What varieties have you grown? What is your favourite? I grew 'Alcazar' for several years in a previous garden and loved it.

Someone recently described this genus as being "old", as in, unfashionable. Any idea why?

Finally, has anyone in zone 4 or colder succesfully over-wintered this plant?

I have a few, all 'Flamenco' varieties I believe.

Not a huge fan of Kniphofia myself. The flowers are very unusual, but they last for so short a time that they don't leave a lasting impression. The foliage stays tidy, but isn't anything special.

Lol! That is too funny. I think there are many who undervalue a plant just because they see it used frequently and in a dull setting. If it isn't some flashy new plant people don't want it, which is a shame. Some my best plants are 'oldies'.

I tried to grow it from seed and the seeds sprouted but the little plants died after they were planted. I want it because it attracts hummingbirds besides it is such a cool and unusual looking plant. If I see it again as a gallon perennial I may try it.

A plant is not "old" until I'm bored with it.
ghoghunter: another approach is buy some from Bluestone and grow them on in a prepared bed or pots. Bluestone's plants make very fast growth. You'd have your gallons to plant by late Aug with plenty of time to get well rooted before winter.
Alternatively, grow them on for 6 weeks then plant them out. You'll just have to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't get crowded or shaded out by established plants.

I love these plants. My favorite is called "Toffee Nosed". It blooms later than my other plants and it usually puts out a second bloom later in the season. It's a great plant.

Sequim Rare Plants has a good selection of these and they have awesome customer service. They sent me a bonus plant of another variety too. I was very happy with them. They bloomed a few weeks after I planted them.

I grow several of these, including 'Percy's Pride', 'Green Jade' and the seed grown 'Flamenco'. They appear to have varying degrees of hardiness in Zone 4-5. The three mentioned seem to be quite hardy for me (in southern Ontario) but I have lost others, such as 'Little Maid'. 'Nancy's Red' is another one whose hardiness is questionable for me. I have two plants of NR in my blvd. that were planted in 2008. They didn't do much last year (as small plants) so am waiting to see what happens in 2010. NR is supposed to be hardy to USDA z.6.

It is a cool looking bloom but it lasts maybe 2 weeks or so. As time goes by and I add more and more here it will most likely have to go since the bloom time is so short.
