Overwintering Mums. When to plant?

Last fall, I bought some mums to be put on display in pots on the deck. I read somewhere that they could be "overwintered" and planted in the spring. So, I put the potted mums in the garage and have been adding water once each month to keep the roots moist. Since I live in Atlanta, is it ok to attempt planting them outside now? If so, how long will it be before I know if they survived (they start putting out leaves).

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

they should remain somewhat green all winter.. especially for you ... if they show no green.. or rotted roots.. they are probably dead ...

if not .. i dont see why they cant be planted now in your zone ...

the root mass might fall apart when you take them out of the pot.. and you might end up with a lot of small plants ... i would not stick a big wad of potting media into the native soil.. and would suggest some amount of removal of potting media ....

Cut off the old stems and you should see new growth at the base. If not, I would cut off the old stems and put the pots outside to see if they emerge, to make sure they are alive.
Then plant them.

RE: Overwintering Mums. When to plant?

I live in North Carolina and my mums overwinter in the ground. I started with a large pot in the fall and kept those in the pot, but in a sunny place outside all winter, then divided and planted in the garden the following spring.

My mums are now in their fourth year and I just keep dividing each spring to keep the plants flourishing. Division is a good thing. I also keep mine clipped back through July 4...then let them grow to bloom in fall. They never disappoint.

As for overwintering in the ground, the basal foliage remains green. I do leave the dying stalks in cold winters. This year, I cut back the mums in January instead of waiting for late February or early March.

Added bonus: the deer, rabbits and voles have never bothered my mums. They've survived drought in summer with minimal watering, including 2010 with 90 days over 90 degrees.

Cameron, that makes two of us that do the same thing. I looked at my mums today and they definately need thinning out. Plant swap is coming up in May..guess what is one of the plants I'm sharing?
