Penstemon Question
| | |
Posted by ruthz 8a D/FW TX (My Page) on Thu, Feb 4, 10 at 19:10
I received several packages of penstemon in a RR swap.
The only one I grow is 'Huskers Red' which I know is digitalis Huskers Red.
I received 2 pkg. that had just digitalis on them and 1 pkg. had white beardstongue.
I'm winter sowing and don't want to duplicate.
Are these the all the same??

RE: Penstemon Question

| Hi, Digitalis and penstemon are two different species. Penstemon is also called beardstongue and Digitalis is foxglove. Penstemons are usually perennial, digitalis are biennial (make foliage the first year, bloom second year, and die but often scatter many seeds). Huskers Red is a penstemon. All are very desirable in my opinion. Chris |
RE: Penstemon Question

| The genus Penstemon is also known as Bearded Tongue. The genus Digitalis is also known as Foxglove. Penstemon digitalis is known as Smooth White Penstemon. P. digitalis 'Husker Red' is a red-leaved form of the above. That's the "fun" of nomenclature! So, the bottom line is, you could have seed of three different plants, two of which could be very similar. Or you could have three batches of seed of the same plant. |

Thank you coolplantsguy. You've answered my question. Sorry I wasn't as clear on the question as I should have been. All 3 packages of seeds are Penstemon. 2 just have Penstemon digitalis and one 1 has white beardstongue on the pkg. I knew they were all white Penstemon but didn't know if they were all the same thing. I'm assuming that those 3 are the same thing, but different from my Huskers Red, |
