According to Chicago Botanical Garden Plant Evaluations, Campanula lactiflora is not reliably hardy in your zone. I have had some cultivars for 10-15 years, and last winter nearly all were either severely damaged or died. The only undamaged cultivars were Superba and Senior(not many flowers on this one, but does not need staking). Superba and Pritchard's variety stand up reasonably well provided they do not get too much nitrogen. The rest are floppers.

Campanula lactiflora is no longer a campanula but something else, but I do not remember the new name at the moment.

Since Roxanna, the OP is in MA, I wouldn't worry about the Chicago Botanical Garden's evaluations. The soils are so different, both in texture and pH in New England vs Chicago, that Campanulas they found died I can grow without problems a full zone further north here in NH. Having gardened both in northern OH (which is similar to Chicago) and NH, I can testify to the huge differences in growing conditions.

I think that in scholarly papers Campanula lactiflora is now Gadelia lactiflora, but it hasn't trickled down to nurseries yet, and IME often the taxonomists debate for a while and it's often easiest to wait for a while to be sure that they won't be changing their minds again. ;>)

It's worth a try. You could always be surprised.

RE: i want Campanula lactiflora!!!

thanks for the replies, everyone.

echinacea, thanks for the source! i will have to try it -- i have had a C.lactifolia for over a decade that does well for me, but i would love a darker colored one -- can't recall where i bought it.

weislaw - that was a most interesting article. thanks for the link.

nhbabs - i do wish the botanists or whoever would stop this business of re-catagorizing our plants! i had/have enough trouble remembering the Latin names that have been around for so long!! now that some clever soul has stayed up late and refigured the zone maps, i am more confused than i used to be (and that's saying a lot) -- am now a half-zone warmer than i was. so do i chance plants that formerly i wouldn't have??? 'tis a puzzlement. thanks for the encouragement!

I bought a 'Prichard's Variety' last year at a local plant sale. The flowers were much paler than I expected. I've seen this one in many English Gardens mags and they always show a plant with much darker blue/purple flowers. I looked the other day and saw no signs of it, so hopefully it didn't die out! I would be pretty upset if that happened, lol.

Christinmk, according to Bob Brown from Cotswold Garden Flowers, there are many imposters on the market , pretending they are Pritchard's variety. According to him , real Pritchard's is supposed to have dark stems.

Lazy S's Farm, and Digging Dog Nursery both carry a couple varieties of c. lactiflora, you could order from either with confidence.

-wieslaw, thanks so much for your input. I had wondered if that was indeed the case, about there being some sort of mix-up with this cultivar. Glad to finally get the answer! The 'Prichard's Vareities' I see on UK sites look so much different (i.e. darker and prettier, lol) than the ones offered in the US!

Here is a pic of mine:

Campanula lactiflora 'Prichard's Vareity'?, Bought at manito plant sale (fall 2010?/or spring 2011?). This might be a 'false' PV, as I have seen pictures of this cultivar in mags (English Garden mostly) that show the plant to have much darker blue/purple flowers

I guess this really is an impostor then, the stems are not dark at all...

RE: i want Campanula lactiflora!!!

oh but that is still a very pretty campanula, CMK. Reminds me of the C.persicifolia 'Chettle Charm'. I would definately grow your variety in preference to the pale 'Lodden Anna' - a study in blandness, imo.

RE: i want Campanula lactiflora!!!

-campanula, it reminded me a bit of 'Chettle Charm' too! I do like the unique pale bluish color of my false 'Prichard's Variety', though you have to be up close to admire the subtle coloration. It was just a bit of a let down design wise, since I had my heart set on it having a dark purple-y flower to pair with a certain orange/pink rose of mine, lol! ;-)
