| I just got some seeds, Hollycock, Nicotania and somy Goji berry. I think all recommend a month in the fridge but I need to start now.
Is stratifying recommended or critical to the plant growing correctly? I suppose if I was lucky the seller may have already been storing them cold... |

| The Hollyhock should not require stratification. I'm not sure about the others. |

| Varieties that have a requirement for chilling, really do need it to get a reasonable germination. Chilling is required with the seeds in a moist environment. This can not be done in advance by the seed supplier. If you get good germination without stratification, then the directions calling for it is in error. If you think this may be the case try a few seeds, to be sure. Al |

| Plants which do not normally have frost where they come from, do not need chilling. No need to chill tropicals.Plants from high north most often need chilling. Most known for the need of chilling: Aconitum, Trollius and many others from Ranunculaceae family. Some plants germinate when very fresh without chilling: Pulsatilla vulgaris(if sown immediately after being ripe) |

| Nicotiana should not require stratification either - it can be direct sowed in early spring around 3-4 weeks before last frost date. |
