Astilbe....Any Suggestions?

I'm going to try my luck with Astilbe this year. I prefer the white/pure pink/lavender.....but I can do a red as long as it veers away from having hints of any orange or peachy hue.

I want one that is hardy, grows well in my area, and is medium to tall in height.

I appreciate any input.

Thanks

Many years ago I had a giant collection of Astilbes, now I have two or three left in a very sheltered and shady place . If you cannot provide them constant moisture throughout the whole season forget about them. Even worse: open place with drying winds. Once a plant withers and the leaves dry up, it will remain ugly for the rest of the season. There are alternatives , at least in the white colour range. I would suggest new hybrids of Aruncus dioicus, which are smaller than the species, and much more friendly than astilbes.

If you have a natural pond and want to plant Astilbe on the banks, one of the most spectacular pink Astilbes is Cattleya.

Here is a link that might be useful: Aruncus Misty Lace

wieslaw59 is right about them needing water--all mine did great last year with the constant rain we had. The year before was a different story--not a drop of rain fell from May to October and they were pretty crispy and ugly-looking most of the season. I watered them daily but it wasn't the constant moisture they require.

That said, they all came back again despite the drought. I wouldn't be without them and have red, white, lavender and pink varieties. My two favorites are A. chinensis and A. pumila. I have quite a few other named varieties but, while lovely, they don't have the impact of the two I mentioned. I don't think there are any red cultivars that lean toward the colors you wanted to avoid. The red ones tend to be Christmas red to my eyes.

Red Sentinel is medium height at 24" while White Gloria is taller at 2-3 ft. Bridal Veil is another tall one at 28".

Love 'Visions' still. For various tints/shades there is also 'Visions in Red', etc.

I've had the most luck with the ones around the bird bath which I empty and refill every day, so the astilbe get lots of water. It has become a very lush stand of them---until DH forgets they aren't weeds and whacks them, that is.
