I just got a notice saying my order is being shipped this week. I am getting bare root Phlox and Begonias. The ground is still frozen solid here in NW IL and covered in snow. Can I pot up the Phlox and keep them outdoors? What about the Begonias?

what kind of begonia??? bulbous??? and what kind of phlox.. old fashioned or creeping .... the phlox are winter hardy, arent they???? .. if they are DORMANT.. stick them all in one pot.. and leave them in the garage ... pre-dampen your media.. but not sodden ... most likely they have been taken out of cold storage.. and wont mind that fridge you call a garage ... but in a week or two.. dont let that garage heat up two and 3 zones.. and make them trigger growth.. before you can get them in the gorund.. i might even put them on the north side of the house.. to keep them dormant as long as possible ... what kind of begonia.. and we can go from there.. ken

Thanks Ken. The begonias are tuberous and are definitely not hardy.

the tuber can be 'started' on moist media.. a few weeks before they go outside ... just to start re-hydrating.. but you dont want them to get to vigorous.. in my z5 MI.. 6/1 would be my target to get the tubers outside ... or i should say.. to have them poking thru soil with greenery ... you might pot them up two weeks earlier .. the pot wont freeze in may ... but leaves will ... as you know.. in z5.. spring is a crap shoot.. good luck with that... ken

If everyone knows it is too early to plant tender plants, shouldn't the grower.? Me, I'd call them immediately and give them your current weather particulars, and ask how to handle the premature shipment. Follow up with an email to document your call.
