Plant Hyacinths now?

Last year, I got some Hyacinth for my in-laws, but they couldn't figure out where to plant them, so I dump them in some really large pot and stuck them in the garage. The plan was to overwinter them there and then plant them in spring.

Jump forward a few months. the winter has been really mild. When I check on them, they have grow out to a foot in height. Should I go and plant them now since they could use some sunlight. However, I am worry that it will snow and hard frost somewhere in the next month or so.

what kind??? the big easter ones.. or grape????

but it doesnt matter... to flower this spring.. they should have been planted last fall ...

if you disturb/plant them now.. there is a good chance they will abort whatever flower they might have this spring..

let them bloom in the pot.. then plant after the flowering.. separate them .... and leave the green leaves to store energy for next year ...

mine.. of both types... have had green showing all winter in my z5 [not 6 inches though] ... most likely.. they will not care about the weather ...

but since i recommend leaving them in the pot.. i would not throw the pot out into mother nature.. until i hardened them off ... i bet your garage.. like mine.. is nearly a z7 ...

heck... you could probably bring them in to 'force them' .. and enjoy the show.. and then in april.. take them out for planting ....

I buy a pot of Hyacinths every winter and in fact have some purple ones blooming now. I just love the fragrance! Anyway, after they are done blooming I plant the bulbs in the front garden, where there are about 6 or 7 years worth. I add a handful of slow-release organic bulb fertilizer every few years and they actually bloom fairly decently for years to come (never as large as the first year though).

Are yours blooming? If not I would just plant them, fertilize and forget about them and see what they do next year. Hyacinths are pretty hardy.

My plant to plant them was to dig a hole, life the hyacinth with soil attached and place it into the hole and cover. They are the bigger asian kind, not the graph hyacinth (though I planted some outside). May be I'll plant them this weekend. I was worry they'll be killed by the snow.

i dont know what an asian one is either ... the ones at the link????

you can NOT throw them in the ground.. until they are properly hardened off from your out of zone garage .... IF you want to be careful about it ...

in my z5.. the soil is going in and out of freeze.. and that is not good for stored bulbs ... had they been out there.. they would be all set to deal with it ...

Well, the pot has been sitting next to the garage door and the garage is unheated. I assume it's warmer than the outside but still fairly cold. Do you think the pot is harden?

I believe this is what I have:

Paul, I think they are okay to plant, esp. in a sheltered spot, like the south side of the house foundation or a stone wall. They are hardy bulbs, and now it's almost Spring, after a pretty mild winter.

I'm even thinking about doing this with some Amaryllis bulbs that I'm annoyed with, which are not even remotely hardy here. After babying them for a year, they did NOT rebloom as usual, so they're going outside soon to sink or swim (along the house foundation in warmest spot, where Gladiolus survive the winter). Maybe next fall when/if they go dormant I'll bring em inside and try to bloom again.

I actually have a Canna growing next to the house that's suppose to be good only to zone 7 and I am in 5a. The house somehow keeps it alive since I have never did anything to shelter it. It came back for the past 2 years.

yeah we pulled off the canna trick ... when they were planted right next to the foundation where the brick chimminey came out of the basement .... 6 feet below the ground ...

they would die to the ground.. but the soil never froze solid ...

come to think of it.. that was an underground micro climate.. never heard to that before ...

If you can get them in the ground (it's not frozen) go ahead and plant them out. Your problem will be sunburn on the leaves, I suspect right now they are pale green.... plant them or place them potted in a sheltered location and cover up well with mulch. Over the next couple days pull the mulch back an inch or two and slowly expose the foliage to the sun until it begins to green up.

I also potted up a couple last winter and kept them in the garage. About two weeks ago I put them out alongside the foundation. It's been in the 40s, but whenever it drops under about 28 I cover them up with some old hay for some protection. I would plant them out in a bed but I'm waiting for more bulbs to show so I can find the empty spots!

Funny, they are not as pale green as I expected. They actually look normal looking. May be enough light gets into the garage.

I stated to put them outside during the day and then putting them back into garage at night. I figure they may be able to make do with more light.
