Hi there, I was working my way through town recently, looking at perennial plantings. Somewhere I came across those. All in all Bergenia are not my favorit plants, but those where just gorgeous. Just a whiff of spring for all you folks still covered in snow and ice, Bye, Lin

Nice pic.Not my favourite plant, either, but when they work, they work. My world is white. Spring is still a fair ways off. But the sun is bright.
|
Pretty with the Galanthus border. I do like the large foliage of bergenia in front of some lacy, taller shade plants.
|
A bit like celery - hardly anyone thinks yummy....but as an aromatic ingredient, few soups are not improved by a stick or two.....as with bergenias. I definitely do not care for the violent pink ones but the pale silberlicht lack the vigour of the deeper pinks. Beth Chatto swore she could never consider a garden without them and I have also (reluctantly) come round to their understated presence at the tail end of winter. A terrible refuge for snails though.

Thanks for sharing the lovely photo but I'm with the above posters & haven't felt compelled to add these to my perennial beds. I prefer hellebore/Lenten rose for early spring blooms. I'm one of those "folks still covered in snow and ice" so the sight of something green was encouraging that the ice and snow will eventually give way to green, pink & yellow.

Nice pic Lin! Not much slug damage either, LOL. Well I like them ;-) I even enjoy the flowers on them, lol. My way of thinking of it is that the foliage adds some much needed contrast (what with those rounded leaves) in the garden. Plus it is one of those few plants that demand hardly any care...

You all know I love me some bergenia!! I ordered Tubby Andrews with the variegated foliage, am looking forward to receiving them in the spring.

Very pretty! I tried one plant once and the foliage was always looking awful and it never bloomed in three years. I would enjoy it, if it looked like that every year. One of these days, I might try it again.
