Problem with Plumbago

Last summer/fall was the second for dwarf plumbago plants we planted as ground cover in a mostly shady area at about 4800' altitude. The plants were watered and fertilized but just sat there and did little. Didn't spread; few of the little blue blossoms. They had done better the first fall after they were planted. Anyone have an idea what could be the problem? How can we get them to flourish?

Hi,

If you are referring to Ceratostigma plumbagoides, they don't really like water and only a little fertilizer is needed, if any. But they also are a little bit tender if you winter temps get too low. I've lost entire colonies here in Michigan when it got below -20 in the winter. Not sure how cold it gets there for you in Utah, but that could be setting them back a little.

The first thing I would recommend is to not water them. They also break dormancy pretty late in the spring, so be patient.

Hope that helps.

Chris

RE: Problem with Plumbago

My dwarf plumbago in NM leafed out beautifully and was much larger than last year. For some reason, the whole top of the plant leaves have turned brown and crunchy--died. There is still some green at the base. We've had cool weather until this week so I've only been watering once every 10 days or so. I have them planted around an Indian Hawthorn that wasn't getting enough water, so I soaked the tree for 3 hours. Might this have caused the die-back? You'd think they'd just wilt rather than turning crunchy... Thanks for any help!

I thought they are a full sun plant? Mine have been in full sun for a decade and certainly spread, more than I've wanted in fact....
