I have three 4" pots of the regular yellow lantana left over from last year. Never got them in the ground. They've been cut back (think I did that earlier this year when one still had some green on it Am wondering if they DID survive and were going to bud this year, would they be showing any green by now in my zone 7b? I'm near the beach (coast of VA) so we rarely get real hard freezes. BUT we've had some really strange weather (unseasonably warm, then flurries, warm again, freezing, etc) so I'm confused...as are my plants....LOL. Most everything else is already showing life. Daylilies have nearly a foot growth, Walker's Low Catmint is beginning to come in, Russian sage just starting to bud, as is my Rose of Sharon tree, just to name a few. In the past, I've not had much luck with Lantana wintering over, even when in the ground so I'm ready to trash them. But hate to do so IF -- by some luck -- they still have life in them. I will not CONSCIOUSLY kill a plant...LOL. I know the simple solution would be just keep watering and watch them. And I will, if it's worth it. But if the answer is -- "NOPE, you'd see something by now" -- well then, you've saved me the hassle. I'm partially disabled so if I can cut out an unnecessary job then all the better....(smile). As I sit here typing, I just remembered my 'garden guru' friend telling me last year to scratch the 'trunk' of some abandonded dead looking potted shrubbery (that I'd found) and look for 'green'. Would this apply to Lantana too? THANKS !!

It's probably too early, but I doubt that they are still alive.....especially in a container. You can try searching and scratching for living tissue, but you cannot compare lantana with a woody shrub. Lantana are tender perennials, generally used as annuals and treated accordingly.

Don't give up on them yet! I am in your same zone and lantanas are the last thing to come out, always when you think they are done for! They are very late arrivers, not for weeks will they show their face. The yellow is the hardiest and will usually return here. The only X-factor that you have is that they were in pots, but there is still a chance for them. Just keep caring for them, they might surprise you!

Thanks Rhizo about the scratch test. Good to know! And thanks Funnthsun! I think your area is most similar to mine...judging from another N Carolinian that has helped me out in the past. Lookin at your name -- are you near the beach, too? :) After I posted that, I did remember having the same kind in hanging baskets that came back one year so maybe there IS hope afterall!! I will definitely think positive and keep them babies watered and fed.

No, I'm in central nc, but they do well here! Good luck :-)

Live Lantana branches are still naked here, not time yet...
|
Think that's where my friend was at, "fun". Even better to know, "purple"....considering you're further south. Fingers crossed, then !!

I left both my lantana and fuschia in their planters to overwinter outside. Lantanas were very dead. Inspected them well. The non hardy annual trailing fuschia have little green sprouts all over them. I am very surprised because they were frozen solid in their baskets for several weeks. Who would have thought. The PNW must be a different sort of 8b.
