Dividing Iris in this warm weather

My iris is exhibiting signs that they need to be divided. They have a hole in the middle. Books say Irises can be divided in spring and fall. Normally, one would divide them now, but due to the warm weather, they look almost fully grown. If I divide them now, does this mean they will not bloom? Should I wait until fall?

That is true! most will not bloom if you divide them now, warm weather or not. If you want to see them flower then wait until they are done then cut them back and dig and divide them. They will survive ether way! I dug and moved all of main in July 2010 after they were all done flowering, and they all flowered the next spring 2011.
Here is a gallery of them all that spring. Hope this helps.

What kind of iris? If bearded iris, definitely what aquawise says. Books I've read say divid after bloom. I've heard to wait at least 2 weeks after they finish blooming, but I've divided immediately after blooming & they have done fine. I've planted as late as November in my zone & a few bloomed the following year, but I don't recommend that late. Here in KY our iris society has their big sale in July when the members all dig & divide their iris. I prefer earlier just because it is hot work then.
If you have siberian or other iris, I'm not so familiar, but I would think if siberians haven't leafed out yet, you might still get bloom. I wouldn't divide those after it gets warm, but wait til early fall. Be sure to give those plenty of water when you transplant.

there is an iris forum.. should you wish to visit such ... nice pix over there .. in season ...

and yes.. you have to start with an ID of what kinds of eye-rye

this happens in hosta ... we call it fairy ring..

and the other option.. is to take a hand trowel.. dig out the rotting center.. down a few inches.. and simply refill with some fresh soil ...

but i will defer to real iris peeps ...

as a general rule... since you are on the newbie learning curve.. is to ALWAYS safest to dig/cut up a plant.. AFTER THEY FLOWER ... if you can ... and that would go for annuals.. perennials .. flowering shrubs ....

it is usually best to do it in dormancy.. but once actively growing.. wait until after flower ... which in some cases.. may even mean.. waiting until fall ...

Simple rule to remember & go by: divide spring bloomers in fall and fall bloomers in spring.
