Scented 'Tickled Pink' Dianthus - divide it?

Just bought 6" pot from Kmart. Beautiful plant but seems so packed full that even when I water AND let it sit in water, it still feels very light. Rootball is very thick & all the blooms in the middle are very short and somewhat mushy (even before my heavy watering).

Seems like it needs dividing. Don't know if I can divide it before planting?

Personally, I would put it in the ground right away and consider dividing in the fall depending on how it grows, but probably not until after it blooms next year. It doesn't sound big enough to divide yet. Dianthus aren't real fast growers in general, and do grow in a dense mat. Dont'cha love that smell?!

OMG !! It does smell delicious. I'm having trouble deciding where to plant it since visually, I have a spot, but fragrance-wise, I want it right beside ME!! LOL I'm thinking I may have to go and buy some more.

One thing tho...a few years back I had two (a light pink variety). I left one in the pot on the porch and planted the other. The one in the ground died and then when I planted the other at the end of the season, it did not come back.

Any ideas as to why? Once again, to me it just looked too tight together and like it rotted or something. Too much water was not the problem with the hot summer we had, believe me.

Thanks !!

Here's a couple pics so you can see size and what I'm talking about. I know it's beautiful the way it is but second pic is taken from overtop of it so you can see the buds in middle are really short. Many had rotted so I pinched them out.

I only ever bought one potted perennial that wouldn't absorb water even sitting in a bucket of it. Unfortunately, I didn't question what it was growing in and the plant died. When I took the dead plant out of the gallon pot, the dirt I'd filled in around it was moist but the root ball and growing medium around the roots were bone dry. I've since decided it was potted in nothing more than peat moss. Now whenever I buy a potted perennial, first thing I check is whether or not it soaks up water through the bottom of the pot.

If it were me, I'd take that dianthus out of the pot, tease the roots loose and either pot it up again in good potting mix or else plant it but not with whatever it's growing in that won't absorb water.

Uhh...duhh, I should have thought of that. I usually DO take my plants out and check the root system. I really need to get it into the ground anyway, so you just gave the little push I needed !!
Thanks,
Bonnie
