Is My Mums Dead?

I have a mums I bought from Home Depot in 2012 and planted it in my flower bed without much to expect. But it came back the next spring and I even successfully divided them into several plants. They looked so beautiful last fall, I had yellow explosion in my front yard. This year i have been looking forward to seeing they come back again, but so far nothing, not a damn green thing popping up. Are they dead or is it too early still? I can't remember when they started to leaf out last year. Please tell me that's there's still hope?

there is always hope...

its just a question of how long you hold out hope ...

not all mums are fully hardy ... its one of the reasons they sell so many in fall ...

and surely.. you know.. this winter was not like last winter ...

so there is a good chance they didnt make it... and i doubt it had anything to do with what you did with them ... its was good old ma nature ...

did you have consistent snow cover??? .. if you did.. chances would be higher.. that they return ...

give them a few more weeks ...

Mums can be very late to emerge. Right now, some of mine are showing some, tiny new growth, but others look dead as nails. Don't be deceived however. Those dead-looking ones might easily be slow starters. I've had that happen many times. Even if you only find a tiny sprig of life at some point, once the weather really warms up that tiny spring can be a blooming plant by fall. Just watch carefully.

I wouldn't give up on them so soon considering the extraordinarily harsh winter that is finally (grudgingly) loosening its grip. According to my garden notes, this year we're nearly 6 weeks behind where the garden was in 2012. I have new growth on many perennials but much later than I've seen in recent years.

If the plants were well established and protected from extreme conditions by a sizeable blanket of snow cover, chances are most will survive whatever Ma Nature throws at them.

Gardening (hopefully) teaches patience. Give them more time.

Give em time. I thought mine were gone but are now greening up.
