Will hostas and fern come up thru mulch?

I have a row of hostas and fern in a dirt bed which come up reliably every year. Yesterday, I added about 1/2"-1" bark mulch to the bed for the first time. Since the hostas and ferns haven't poked thru the ground yet, I couldn't tell where they were, so I lightly mulched over the entire bed. Will the new growth pop up thru the mulch? If so, do I need to remove the mulch from around the plants?

absolutely ... dont give it another thought ...

dirt is what is on your hands and carpet.. after you have worked in soil ... anyway ..

there is a hosta and a fern forum.. if you ever want to learn more ...

Oh yeah. Mine are already popping up through thier mulched beds. I like using straw or shredded leaves for my hosta beds in the Fall for the same reason. Once Spring has come, I cultivate the decomposed straw into the ground, wait for the hostas to finish emerging and then fill the area in with bark mulch.
