What other pholx to plant with Phlox David?

Posted by growitnow (My Page) on

Hi,

Two questions:

1)What's wrong with Robert Poore?

A few seasons ago everyone was selling Robert Poore. Now I can barely find it. I am about to get some more, but before I order I thought I would ask if anyone knows if there is a reason Robert Poore seems to have dropped out of the market?

2)What phlox would be good interspersed with Phlox David?

I have a 12-ft band about 1.5-ft wide I was going to plant only with Phlox David, interspersed some colored phlox, and I was at first thinking Robert Poore. I'd be grateful any advice on whether this is a good choice or if there are better alternatives for color combo?? Disease resistant and (plant) looks good all summer are important.

many thanks,

Look into Phlox maculata 'Natasha'. Very mildew resistant, flowers are pinwheeled pink and white. Or Phlox 'Nicki' also very mildew resistant with magenta flowers.

Robert Poore has a rather weak stems compared to many others, thus flopping after a strong rain/wind . Once flopped, it will not stand up again. Phlox David is classified in Europe (Germany and others) as a variety of Phlox amplifolia and not paniculata. It has a very rampant growth and running habit.

Robert Poore is a very, very tall grower that can sometimes flop, but otherwise there is nothing wrong with it. It is fragrant, highly mildew resistant and has a great magenta color. The reason it is less available now is because phlox are not really good sellers for a lot of plant nurseries, so it has simply dropped out of production.

If you are looking for interesting cultivars of Phlox, check out Perennial Pleasures Nursery in Vermont. They have an extensive selection of antique, new and "found" cultivars, and their list is certainly the best in North America. I am expecting a phlox shipment from them at the end of this month.

Here is a link that might be useful: Perennial Pleasures Nursery

Phlox Nicky(original name Dusterlohe) was a healthy plant with me, but DEFINITELY not a plant for a position in full sun. The colour does not last even 2 hours in strong sunlight, turning to dirty white. I shovel pruned it because it also had weak stems. Phlox Iris is identical in colour, burning just as bad(shovel pruned). The least bad one in this colour is Border Gem (it is selfsupporting).

My Phlox Nicky held it's color very well throughout it's bloom time...but now that you mention it wieslaw, it is in a filtered sun/shade spot. I was going to move it, but maybe I had better leave well enough alone.

Actually I never thought about exposure. My spot would be in pretty full sun, hot summers in Va.

Any (continuing and helpful!) suggestions? I'd welcome any feedback, this is kind of an experiement

(big long row of only phlox)

thanks,
