Is cimicifuga hardy for you?

I love cimi, but it isn't hardy here. I tried one a couple years ago and it didn't last. I'm partial to burgundy plants in general. Thanks.

cims are perfectly hardy in zone 5. Rheum palmatum another architectural plant, also aconitums fill out nicely, goatsbeard tall and architectural. Thalictrums offer few varieties that will be tall and showy. Persicaria polymorpha while quite rare is one of nice shrubby perennials.

Rheum is also pretty wide, only very tall when in bloom I think.
I agree with the Thalictrums and Aconitums though. I adore my T. rochebrunianum, whoes flowers look like 'pink mist'. I am also crazy about Monkshood, but many are not since they are so poisonous.

Might I also suggest Foxglove (common but pretty) and Ligularia, which has great foliage and tall flowers. Martagon Lilies do fine in a shady area. My 'Robustissima' Anemone is in nearly full shade and does wonderful. It is about four feet tall and always has lots of blooms!

What about goatsbeard (Aruncus dioicus)? It can be very lovely if you have moist shade. I've actually got some growing in my shade garden under evergreens and it does just fine, but I do water that garden.

Very pretty Cimicifuga Paul!

Lots of good suggestions. I'll toss meadowsweet out there too, but it does like it on the moist side. There are some taller astilbies as well. Angelica gigas is nice too, though it's usually biennial. It reseeds though.

Ligularia "The Rocket" or cimicifuga which is hardy in zone 5. I have both growing in quite a bit of shade.

How about Eupatorium "Chocolate"? It is one of my favs.
