Yarrow

Howdy!
I was gardening the other day and found this itty bitty yarrow plant. It's about four inches tall and has a decent root system, not very substantial but enough to grow off of. Apparently we had it in the garden years ago, but it only thrived for one season before it got crowded out by other plants. How fast will this tiny plant grow and will it bloom this year if I move it away from other established plants?

RE: Yarrow

If I recall, the first year I planted it from a 3' pot -- by the end of the season it had grown 3ft. tall (at least), bloomed, and spread so much that by the next year I had to dig most of it. Mine spread mainly left to right. It was yellow.

Just FYI, I made mistake of planting it as background behind lilies that got too tall, so the yarrow fought to find the sun, growing all gnarly and curvy so I eventually dug it up completely. But I've seen it looking beautiful in other gardens when it has full sun.

I'm trying out red this year. Planted it in fall. Bought it in what I call 'scratch & dent' section (discounted & nearly dead) in a 6' pot. Started out slow this year but now it's already filled in really pretty.

I've included a pic for you to see.

Here is a link that might be useful: Red Velvet Yarrow

Wow. That's a lot of growth already so early in the season. I hope mine does that well. I'm crossing my fingers that the squirrels won't get at it before it takes off... They've gotten everywhere. :(

RE: Yarrow

Thanks ! I was surprised at the growth, too, and tickled to death. Looking forward to seeing the red versus the yellow.

I have a few squirrels that visit my garden area since I also have a birdfeeder so they munch on fallen seed, mostly. They were getting on my feeders so I actually started feeding them crunchy dog and cat food in a specific area (a dish taped to my porch railing so I can watch them) and this seems to keep them away from the feeder - and perhaps my plants? The bluejays love the pet food, too..LOL

Wouldn't suggest this if you have tons of squirrels, tho. Feeding just might attract more. I'm lucky with just a few around here.

Other then tulip bulbs, I haven't had any problems with squirrels and my plants. Yarrow smells so funny, I wonder if they'd even like it.

bbfan10 - until it flowers you will not know what yarrow you have. It might be Red Velvet but it also might be plain old Achillea millefolium in dirty white. Don't get too excited until you know whether you have a desirable perennial or a weed. Keep a watching brief.

RE: Yarrow

I'm pretty sure it's the red variety because I found a picture of it on my computer before it mysteriously disappeared for four years... haha

I just remembered I was weeding out the chives a couple weeks ago and found a bunch of frilly-leaved plants. I tossed them in the trash heap because I thought they were weeds. It just dawned on me that they could have been yarrow as well. :( What a shame.

RE: Yarrow

It grows super-fast in my garden, and no animals ever seem to bother it.

RE: Yarrow

bbfan - so you had the red?? I was assuming you had the yellow, so everything I said about what I had previously WAS about the yellow. But the pic I posted is of the red, new to me and new this year, okay? Just so no confusion.

So how did the red do? Tell me how tall it got, how much it spread, etc., so I can anticipate if I've planted it in the wrong spot...LOL Thanks !! Bonnie

RE: Yarrow

The red yarrows I have, Red Velvet & Paprika, aren't that tall, I don't know, less than 2' tall. Fast spreader & reseeds too. I love the color. Paprika goes through several stages, bright red, more orange, then fading to almost pink almost white. If you are smart enough to keep yarrow deadheaded, it will bloom almost all summer. The only tall yarrow I have is Cloth of Gold, that one really reseeds like mad, but does make a statement.

RE: Yarrow

Thanks ngraham ! I didn't know that about deadheading. And I must have had Cloth of Gold cuz it sure did reseed like you said.
