It's not dead until it's really dead

I have to dig and store my Begonia grandis tubers inside since they aren't reliably hardy here. No big deal - usually. When I took them out of storage sometime in late February, I thought they were goners for sure. Instead of clumps of nice, fat tubers, I found black, shriveled little lumps of nothing. I have no idea what went wrong since I've been doing this for years, but it happened. I have a feeling it has something to do with last years drought and the fact they were probably dehydrated when I dug them. Don't know for sure.

I just couldn't bring myself to throw them away, so I potted the little black lumps - 3 to a shallow tray - and waited. Today I found this:

{{gwi:207827}}

Granted, it's going to be a long recovery and out of the 6 planted, only 2 have sprouted, but it's better than having nothing.
