Anemone Max Vogel or Pink Saucer

After perusing the garden sites online all winter, I had decided that I wanted to purchase Anemone Max Vogel this spring. I really liked the online pictures of Party Dress and Alice as well, but, based on my research concluded Max Vogel would be the better plant. Now that our nurseries are offering plants for sale, I have found that my favorite nursery only offers Anemone Pink Saucer. Has anyone grown these different varieties. Would it be worth mail ordering Max Vogel (or Party Dress or Alice) and paying for shipping, or should I just get the Pink Saucer that is offered locally? Where do these four varieties fall on your rating scale?

Thanks.

To me, with the possible exceptions of height or double flowers, one pink fall anemone is pretty much like the next :-) You may find the attached plant evaluation helpful in making a decision.

The Pink Saucers is missing from the eval cuz it is so new but it is touted as having the earliest bloom, if that's a consideration.

I agree with gardengal about the pinks.

I have only had Max Vogel, so can't really compare it with the other you mentioned. I didn't find MV a very robust plant- it died out on me third year. Not sure if it was only marginally hardy, not entirely happy where I planted it, or was simply a dud cultivar.

That is just my experience with the plant though! Don't let it keep you from getting it if you like the looks of it ;-)

Thank you for the information. My preference is to buy plants at a nursery locally rather than mail order, if I can find what I want. I have no experience with Anemones of any kind, so I think I will start with the Pink Saucer that I can get here. If it turns out I love Anemones, I may mail order other varieties next year.

Thanks again.

In case you do not know , the Anemones have a VERY running habit, and they are NOT plants for a small tidy garden. It took me several years to exterminate them, they just kept popping up in the middle of other plants.

"...they just kept popping up in the middle of other plants". And between stones. One of my favorite flowers but I have to reign it in constantly and for the reason weislaw59 stated (running) weed killer is a no-no unless you want to kill the entire plant.

The "running" issue is very useful to know ahead of time. I have not generally used weed killer, and usually just mulch well and try to keep ahead of the weeds by pulling them when they are small. Will pulling work, or is it difficult to get the roots and then the unwanted plants come back?

At the moment I have only one plant with a running habit in my garden. I just had to have it because of its beautiful flowers. I bought a big plastic bricklayer tub and cut the bottom out of it (45 cm tall)and dug it down into the soil. Then I planted the plant in it. It has worked fine for me for 7 years without any 'escaping roots'.
