ornamental alliums

Not sure if I should post here or not. I've had 15 or so beautiful clumps of alliums for 5 or 6 yrs now. This year they came up flopped over and have no flower heads. Other ones in the garden have the flower heads but are just single plants. Do they need to be lifted, and thin them out. Don't know allot about them. Thnx

Mark

I experienced the same exact thing this year. Only two of the clumps have flower stalks coming on. Could it have been the cool temps that caused the foliage to flop? Mine aren't near 5yrs old yet. Will be anxious to hear what others say.

What type of alliums are you growing? Do you know the cultivar name or species? Alliums are such a varied lot that it would be helpful to know more information before giving advice :-)

Sorry I don't have any info, I recieved them years ago from my mom. There purple and thats all I know 12 to 14 inches tall...I was wondering if the weather had something to do with it.

This is pretty strange! I too have alliums that are not performing this spring. I have a 4 foot diameter clump of "no name" alliums that bloom with about 4 inch diameter pale purple blooms on stalks about 2 feet tall - they have been undisturbed in my garden for probably 20 years or more. I went to check on them after reading this post, and the only buds I could find are on a few strays that have seeded themselves around the garden. I have never known them to not bloom before. What????

Thats exactly the case, a few strays have buds. I really think it could be the early heat and freezing temps. But I'm no expert. I was thinking of lifting the clumps and thinning them out. I think I'll leave them another year and take a wait and see approach... There so beautiful when all the clumps are in bloom. I moved them into position when they were in bloom 5 yrs ago.

Same thing in SW ohio... poor allium blooms. We had the early warm weather and then later freezing.

my globemaster are multiplying and standing straight up at attention, here in MT. Bizarre they grow an inch a day...expect to bloom in 2 weeks.

oh...I should say, I believe this is their third or fourth year. However, I have the small white ones with beautiful foliage...I just don't like them.
