Need ideas for a red blooming perennial that blooms right now

Does anyone have any suggestions for a bright red perennial that blooms right now (late April) in zone 7? I need a splash of color to go with my gold Aurinia saxatilis and lavendar phlox. I have a few red tulips that are trying to do the job but they don't last very long especially since we commonly get sudden days of high heat in spring here in VA. One book mentioned a plant called Euphorbia griffithii 'Fireglow' which seems like it might bloom at the right time. Does anyone grow it? When does it bloom for you?

Thanks,
Steve

Helleborus orientalis"Red Lady", Pulsatilla vulgaris "Red", Oriental poppies?

Euphorbia Fireglow is distinctly bright orange in my garden, not red. Here in a cooler 8b, it's still 6" spikes of emerging new growth this week. And a spreader, somewhat aggressive - requires some room.

If you could accommodate a shrub as a background Chaenomeles 'Crimson and Gold' would do the job. Alternatively Anemones de Caen.

Thanks Morz8, it sounds like the timing wouldn't be right and I wouldn't want a spreading plant in this location. The Pulsatilla vulgaris 'Red' looks like it might be an option for me.

The only plant in my garden that's blooming right now and is red is primula x polyantha. It's red with a yellow center. But it will probanly go dormant in a hot summer area.

I too have a small primrose blooming right now, but it's too short and prefers the shade. A Japanese primrose would be taller, maybe I could figure out a way to shade the foliage amongst the other perennials in the bed. This is a full sun bed by the way.

Geum, Armeria, Delosperma, Dianthus, Lonicera sempervirens, and Aquilegia canadensis all have red varieties and are all blooming in zone 7b right now.

As are my gold Aurinia saxatilis and lavender (woodland) phlox.

Hi Steve. I noticed a nice double flowered Geum at Anderson's in Newport News about a week ago. Though it might be a "scarlet" red.Forgot the cultivar name.
Wish I'd bought it! Maybe T & M has seeds...

If it were a poppy, it'd have to be an Iceland. As the Orientale 'King Kong' I bought from McDonalds is only now just budding up at the base of the crown of foliage.

Tree peony are finished up, so maybe that's too early. But the others are getting ready. I just planted a nice red 'Felix Crousse' root from Lowes.

Too bad there aren't Iris that color!

There must be some Dianthus that is a suitable red that will bloom soon. I grow alwoods x alpinus & it's getting ready.
Tha't about all I can come up with, for now.

I'd only suggest Centranthrus ruber, if you dead head to avoid self seeding.

But I'd recommend snapdragons any time, as a cool season "perennial" since it actually is our area & I'm partial to those anyways. Sorry, but I've only got pink & pale yellow in the tall 'Rocket' series. I'm sure it is available in "Cherry" & "Red" from Park Seed if you can't find six packs in the specific color, locally as I did.

Is there a Geranium that fits your color liking?

I don't know that there is a Helenium that is a good suitable red.

Though there is a Dicentra called 'King of Hearts' that I really like, yet I'm uncertain if it'd survive in full sun, especially in mid summer heat, here in VA.

If you like a vibrant magenta red, then maybe Lychnis coronaria might work. hth

Hi Steve - I live in Hampton (Buckroe Beach). I have Autumn Salvia 'Furman's Red' that just got first bloom today!! I got it end of last year at Lowes' ("scratch & dent" discount plants - only kind I buy...LOL) and got it in ground before frost. Wasn't even sure it would come back. Had slow start but suddenly, it's very lush. Looking forward to seeing it full bloom !! Says 24-48" high & 24-30" wide.

Here's a couple pics I just took tonight. Maybe this would work for you? (Sorry pics are so huge...don't know any other way).

My anemone coronaria are blooming their little red heads heads off right now.

I would possibly suggest Dianthus barbatus 'Heart Attack'.

Maybe peonies are taller than you are wanting, but I love them. Felix Crousse or Buckeye Bell are pretty. Trouble with peonies, their foliage looks ratty by August.
I like dianthus, & some rebloom off & on. I'm not sure when roses bloom there, but what about a mini rose? Mine are budding up here, probably would be in bloom where you are.

RE: Need ideas for a red blooming perennial that blooms right now

It's tempting to go to Lowes or one of my local greenhouses to look for something red but they frequently force plants to bloom early because they sell better in bloom, unfortunately that can really throw off any attempt at color scheme planning in a perennial bed. :(

I meant to say earlier how much I like your flower bed. I agree, just another little touch of red would really pop.

RE: Need ideas for a red blooming perennial that blooms right now

Thanks Nancy! By the way, a number of the seeds you sent me in our trade have now germinated. :) (I winter sowed them.) Achillea 'Cloth of Gold', Baptisia 'Screamin Yellow', Verbena bonariensis and Eryngium are all up. In fact I transplanted the Achillea 'Cloth of Gold' out into the ground yesterday and now we're getting a nice soft cool rain to soak the seedlings in. I think I'll plant some of the Baptisisia 'Screamin Yellow' into the pictured front bed where there is a nice clump of purple Baptisia australis already established.

 o
RE: Need ideas for a red blooming perennial that blooms right now

You'll have to tell me if the baptisia crossed. I do have the white & the purple baptisias, not too close, but they might have. I should have wintersowed more of the white & yellow baptisias myself, I do really like them.

I'll let you know in a few years. ;)

"Rock Garden" peonies would fit the bill. They have beautiful red blooms,(I have 'Early Scout'. Unfortunately I have no pic of mine) are dwarf in stature, need no staking, and the foliage looks great all season.
The link below has a few listed on the same page with pics. I have no clue about the company. I just wanted to link to photos.

Thanks Remy, do yours bloom at the same time as creeping phlox?

I'm jealous. Your garden is about a month ahead of mine. Red's a tough one for an early bloomer. Tulips would have been my first suggestion. Is it too early where you are for daylilies? There are some really nice red varieties. Someone else mentioned poppies - mine are about 4 inches tall right now. In another few weeks, they'll be up and blooming.

Steve,
I was thinking of this post today. I saw buds on my Early Scout. So neither has bloomed yet here of course and on top of that things are behind schedule here. But I will post back to let let you know how the bloom times work out.

Steve,
I finally remember to post back! Yes, they do bloom at the same time. It was very cold this spring so the peony bloom was a week behind a regular spring. All my peonies were late to sprout up and get to bud stage. The phlox which is against warmer pavement started sooner and kept blooming through the peony bloom. So in a normal spring, they would of started at about the same time. Even in an off year like this one, there is still over lap time.
