| I am done OUT of ideas - don't know if it's too many other things on my mind or too many years of trying to figure this out, so: What is a good reddish-leaved perennial for sun to part shade, about 1' to 1.5' high? I'll even go for dark-leaved, but prefer reddish or maroon or burgundy. Top priority is attractive foliage all season, flowers are secondary. I've tried penstemon and didn't like. Coral bells are definitely out, I constantly need to replace them. Blood grass is iffy for me (have a patch already, usually need to replace a plant or two every year). Thanks! |

| Persicaria, summat like Red Dragon. Then there's always Ajuga. Maybe a short astilbe. Harder to find little hardy red-leaved plants, might be best to go the annual route for this one with the easily raised coleus, perilla, basil, japanese parsley, Gardening in shade is going to be a bit of an eye-opener for me, having never had any (shade) before.....and now I have more than I know what to do with. |

| Oh yeah, just remembered, saxifrages - there is a really good Wada's Fortune (I think it's called, but I rather like these shady tough saxifrages). |

| I second Persicaria 'Red Dragon'. I also like Elderberry 'Black Lace' |
|
| epimediums, dark leaved geraniums (Midnight Reiter, Dusky Crug) lobelia cardinalis (but that is tall) and we are getting into ligularia territory. |

| You might try scarlet Kale or red lettuce, or garnet amaranth (that one might be too tall). There is also purple emperor sedum. There are also some nice red or black Euphorbia's- but I can't keep them alive in my 5b garden over winter- so I can't really recommend those. |
|
| Actea/Cimicifuga 'Brunette' or 'Hillside Black Beauty' or any of the other dark maroon foliaged varieties. There are some small dark foliaged rhodies, but I think most top out around 2 feet or just taller. Both will do fine in part shade. |
