Ever get all wound up about a plant and then...

forget you even have it?

Happened to me with Geranium phaeum 'Margaret Wilson'. Was outside today, noticed her growing and thought, "Oh, that's nice, I forgot I had that", this after I searched up and down locally for another one of her last season. LOL!

Lol, yeah! Sometimes wanting a plant is more fun than having it. Happened to me with Athyrium filix-femina 'Frizellie'. I saw it PDN and other catalogs and kept thinking how much I wanted one and how neat the unusual fronds were. Now three or four years later...eh! It just doesn't make much of an impact. Think it is one of those plants you kind of have to have at eye level to be able to admire its uniqueness.

Nope, I think it is a sign that you have to many plants. LOL!!!

I keep photo log of what I have when they bloom and color and I am gardening on 4 acres.

I've been there with "just HAD to have plants" and then later couldn't even remember where I planted those plants I wanted so bad until that "oh, yeah!" moment when they bloomed. That's right, marquest, way too many plants!

I still look forward to every plant to see what it is going to do each year. On the other hand, I have been disappointed many a time with a new plant. It just doesn't always live up to expectations or doesn't perform in my particular garden. I do try to focus on what is working in the garden and what really makes me happy and add more of those in different varieties if I can. Then if a new plant disappoints, you still have a large amount of tried and true plants.

I'm with you PM2! My philosophy exactly. I'm getting pickier with what I spend my plant budget on, and am starting to make lists of what does well where, and then plant more of that in different areas.

I've always admired photos of witch hazel, and finally planted a vernalis five years ago, but have not been impressed at all. I battle the tent caterpillar every year, the witch hazel is a host...or is it the gypsy moth?? Maybe this year it will finally shine!

Hi Anita! Nice to see you. :-)

I'm surprised to hear the witch hazel has been disappointing. I have always wanted one too. I've seen a photo or two of a mature Witch Hazel, perfectly sited, growing vigorously and pruned expertly and I just have to sigh. lol I hope this is the year for you!

I had a similar experience with Amelanchier. I kept reading what a great all around native it was and bought two shrubs and a tree. It was just a train wreck in my garden. I moved the shrubs twice and then gave one away and I just had my son cut down the tree last fall after 5 years. The winter moths were making a mess of it every spring and the tree was never producing much fruit and the fall foliage just did nothing for me.

I sat down and made a list too. I call it my 'five on five' list and I'm still working on it. For the most active, five gardening months of the year, which five plants were the most rewarding, most carefree plants that I wouldn't be without. From that list, I try to make sure at least half of my purchases are some version of those.

Great idea..."five on five." Or can be said, also, "Five on Fire!" meaning the best.
