 o
Russian Sage

My Russian Sage, never a strong grower (it's in a semi-shady spot, but that's all I have!), seems to have disappeared over the winter.

Is there a chance that it will return from an over-wintered root, or is it gone for good?

Is it completely gone? Nothing sticking out of the ground? Did you cut it back or has it just disappeared by itself? I'd cut mine back and very little was left, but it's coming back strong now. I do get more sun than you, but not full sun. Good luck !!

Too early to say for sure it is gone. It is not early to sprout in the spring. It will send sprouts from the ground. I usually cut mine down nearly to the ground as it has a lot of dieback in zone 5. It does not like wet feet. If it was too wet for too long it will croak.

Russian sage is hardy to zone 4 but it needs full sun. I'm growing several plants in various beds around the garden but they're all full sun. So far this year there's no new growth on any of them but it's been an abnormally chilly spring here in the northeast. I wouldn't give up on it just yet.
