Echinacea

I bought seven types of echinacea seed ; had excellent germination. Put them under lights in my basement in 3inch pots. They started to grow very well. Now the leaves on some are beginning to wilt First I thought the plants might be too dry; I gave them a little more water, but the wilting continues. Now I have one or two plants of each variety, but don't know what tomorrow will bring. I've thrown out the plants that have begun to wilt. I have several dozen other plants, including zinnias that are doing great! Anyone have any suggestions what to do. I can't put them outside since we are experiencing freezing temperatures at night and low daytime temperatures. I am afraid they have some disease that might be spread to the other plants. The echinacea I'm growing are hot papaya, tomato, lime cocoa nut (this one seems least affected) , pow wow berry, sunrise yellow, and daydreams.

RE: Echinacea

It's a fungus caused by overwatering and/or poor drainage. Try putting a small fan over them. Indoors they need good air circulation. What kind of potting mix did you use? Also, I have found it beneficial to mix a little peroxide in the water I use to water them. Water them from the bottom as well.

When you want to determine if they need watering, pick up the pot. If they are very light, water. If the pot is heavier, don't water. A lot of this is learned with experience. Echinaceas can be difficult to start indoors. I know how frustrating they can be. If you continue to have trouble, wintersowing works great with them.
