Bledding hearts didn't bloom much

We planted bleeding hearts, astilbe, and lily of the valley plants earlier this year, in March. The bleeding heart plants grew fairly well, but bloomed very little or not at all. Do they need time to establish and will bloom better their second year? They are in a slightly sunnier area...I think they get about 5-6 hours of sun. I am pretty good about watering, though.

I haven't grown bleediing hearts but a lot of perennials may not bloom in the first year. I suggest waiting and see what it does this year. Make sure you give it a good dose of compost.

I grow Bleeding hearts and yes, they do get larger and bloom more, every year. I have ours in more shade than that. 5-6 yrs is a lot of sun for a shade plant like Bleeding heart. I grow my tomatoes in 6 hrs of sun. Some of my bleeding hearts get barely an hour or two at the most and they do very well. Some astilbes will tolerate more sun than bleeding hearts, but they really dislike drying out and I still think 5-6hrs is too much for them too.

Species bleeding heart are growing here in everything from full, all-day sun to full shade and they thrive wherever they're growing, with no supplemental water. I've seen no noticeable difference in the amount of blooms based on where they are situated. My soil is rich, sandy loam which could be the reason they thrive no matter how much sun they get. That being said, the only one I planted is a white variety and I did plant it in full shade. The rest were already growing here.

Most perennials do take several years to mature and bloom their best.

I can't believe I misspelled "Bleeding!"

Thanks, everyone! I am going to space it out a little bit more (when is a good time to move it?) and then see how it does next year. I don't know if we have anywhere with more shade. Dh really likes these plants, so he knows we are taking a big chance. At least we have hope. :)

You do know that some bleeding hearts go dormant after blooming? I had purchased about 2 yrs. ago the "Luxiant" variety and it "bit the dust" and one comes back each year but it never has got any larger than when somebody gave me the seedling. I think it is not in right location. May dig it up and pot it up for an upcoming plant swap I think.

I position my bleeding heart, so that they are behind other plants that will screen the bleeding heart as it becomes dormant and yellows in early summer.

My 'Luxuriant' does not go dormant. None do for me except spectabilis. The bigger old fashioned Bleeding Heart.

A friend gave me a seedling from her plants and I bought the Luxuriant but I think it was that one that didn't survive. What survived is the one that my friend gave me but I don't think it is in great soil and there are a lot of fiberous roots from shrubs and trees there. I probably could put it on the side where they hydrangeas are located and it would be great for it. It may be about 4 in. if that tall and it's a few years old.
