Kirengeshoma palmata

I learn something new almost every day browsing the web. If you have shade and you want something yellow, this is the plant for you. Does anyone here grow this??

Here's a picture of it in full bloom:

I had it in a previous garden. It's not easy, but not overly difficult. Unique fruit after the flowers.

I've had it for quite a few years, mine is in shade most of the day. It comes back faithfully every year but hasn't gotten any bigger.

I had it for several years. Last year it suffered badly from the drought (it wasn't possible to keep up with the watering) and looked terrible. Even in better summers it was susceptible to crispy edges in hot hot weather)

I moved it last year and have not seen a sign of it yet. But it has been a slow spring.

Nice plant. Get it if the price is right. And you are willing to water during a heat spell and/or drought

Ahh, the enablers. LOL! I think I may have to give this plant a try. I have a spot where it might do okay. Since our clay soil seems to hold water pretty well (away from the maples, anyway), it should be easy to keep the area where I would to put it moist, on the north side of the garage. I'm planning a woodland type garden there with mostly native plants (though this plant isn't native) and my hostas. This would be a good plant for the back of the border where it'll get no direct sun and provide a splash of color during the time of year where there is little going on in the shade. Thanks for posting this. :)

I grow it and love it. I thought mine gave up the ghost in the drought last year - went dormant early - but it is up a foot and beautiful right now!

Mine hasn't grown much bigger but when I planted it, I didn't plant it deeply enough. for some stupid reason, I've never remedied that issue - LOL. I think I will give it a chance this year (after 4 years) and replant it after it flowers! :)

Years ago when I worked at a Nursery that sold unusual perennials, they had it. It is a lovely plant, native of Japan. Although I did really like it, I had no shade back then and it does like shady, moist acidic soil. It also blooms late summer.

Can't add much else to what was said above (I have had basically the same experience with mine as everyone else has with theirs) except that it is a late riser in spring, so best to mark the area!

Less common is Kirengeshoma koreana, which (imho) has a slight edge over K. palmata. In K. koreana, the flowers are outward facing, instead of nodding, so it gives a slightly better show.
However, if neither species flowered, I'd still grow them because the maple-like leaves are so pretty.
Both are fairly easy to raise from seed.

Both K. palmata and K. koreana grace my woodland garden. . .it's one of
my all time favorites. Another unusual, late-blooming shade plant that
I discovered just a few years ago is leucoseptrum variegatum. . .but it
seems to be pretty difficult to find. I was lucky enough to stumble across
it in full bloom at Variegated Plants Nursery when I visited a few years
back. . .but it's NOT in their web plant inventory. Plant Delights Nursery
used to carry several varieties. . .
