| Penstemon is one of those plants that usually retains foliage over the winter. At least here it does and then starts growing in spring.
We had a brutal summer followed by a very cold winter and the penstemon has a lot of brown at the bottoms. I was afraid that cutting it will mean I will not get any blooms this year. Do I cut it to the ground or leave it be? |

| I usually just use my fingers to "comb" through the foliage and remove the brown leaves. |

| when in doubt.. delay ... you can always go in.. in a few weeks and get it out ... after you have seen how it is responding ... if summer is drought.. you should spend extra time in fall INSURING good deep waterings ... to overcome the effects of the heat and drought ... ya i know.. hindsight is 20/20 ... lol ... ken |
