Penstemon 'Sweet Joanne'--overwintering?

I just planted a few Penstemon 'Sweet Joanne' in full sun and well draining soil. For those of you who grow it, how did it overwinter for you?

I am just checking whether this will be a pretty annual or a reliable perennial.

By the way, I bought these from Bluestone last December or January when they listed this cultivar at 50% off. I got them for something ridiculous like $3.50 each. Ditto for Penstemon 'Dark Towers', although those were more like $4.50 each. The plants were delivered yesterday and they were absolutely huge and healthy. The new Bluestone rocks!

Funny you mention this plant (SJ) as I bought and planted two of them *very* late this past fall...specifically October 29 2011 and I *think* I see evidence this spring that they both made it through my zone 5 winter (albeit a very moderate winter this year). So your zone 6a should be a breeze for them.

No problems here for a few years.

It stayed green all through winter here. These are great plants and bloom all summer. I just wish I could propagate them. Nothing has worked so far.

I've had it here in the frozen north for 3 or maybe it's 4 years now. It's done just fine through my winters, hoping our weird spring doesn't do it in.
