What is this? I thought it was foxglove...

Hi all! I received these in a trade as foxglove, but it isn't progressing how I thought foxglove progressed. It almost seems to be blooming now without any petals-- just stamens. I've never had foxgloves before, so maybe this is a pre-bud thing I didn't know about. Any ideas? Thank you!

Here is another foliage shot.

It does look like foxglove and it's not blooming yet.... Just wait a while.

OK, cool. I thought that it may just be a stage I've never seen. I saw pictures of buds online and since these were nothing like those, I started to wonder. Thanks!

Hang on a sec... I wonder if it is actually Verbascum. Sorry.

Hmmm... Doesn't look like digitalis or verbascum to me, but I'm not sure what it is. I'd like to see it bloom.

I've had verbascum and it's not this. That is the bloom. I'll take a better picture (not in the middle of the night haha) tomorrow and see if I can get a clearer close up.

To me the foliage looks absolutely like Digitalis purpurea. Possibly a white flowered one judging by the stem colour. I don't know what has happened to the buds on the top stem but the lower one looks a bit more promising. Foxgloves are prone to fasciation - possibly that is what has happened to the flowers.

Here is a link that might be useful: Example of fasciation in Digitalis.

Looks like foxglove to me too

I'll try to remember to post a pic when I get home. These flowers are open completely-- it seems the petals are simply missing-- never having formed. BUT the upper buds look normal. I think it is a foxglove, but there is some odd mutation of the lower buds. Thank you all for your help!

See comment and link re fasciation above.

Foxglove can be spectacular. Last year I had a couple nice patches, started from seed the year before. This year, only a handful of plants made it through the winter, lost most of last year's seedlings to crown rot.

Lovely! So yes, it is foxglove. It seems like I have two types of flower buds. One developed normally. The other is open that whole time and the petal just grows outward while open. Attached is a more developed photo of the process. The ones which have turned colors were the ones originally photographed. Then you can see one which is developing normally which hasn't developed color yet. Thanks you guys for all your help!
