No, it's not just you. Hideous! There are lots and lots of other words I could use, but for the sake of the children, hideous will have to suffice. Kevin

Certainly no more garish than much of our Christmas decoration. Not my taste at all, but I hope they are happy with it. I wonder if it attracts insects and birds, or if Dubai is too large to allow for wild life of any kind. I won't be adding it to my Bucket List. Martha

carl18 z6 NJ (My Page) I guess the design is suitable for desert - like the gardens in Las Vegas. I think it is great! |

No desire whatsoever to visit Dubai. As for the garden itself? Can't even imagine the sort of resources (WATER) needed to care for in a land of sand.

Not my kind of display garden; however, it may truly be a wonder for those who live in a desert region. It has the vision of Disneyland run amok. All the links I tried seem like photoshopped renderings--- maybe images of what the garden is supposed to look like when completed? I'd like to see the gardens with actual people in them.

I'd love to go to Dubai. I try to imagine this through the eye of one who is raised in desert. Grass itself would be so foreign and those flowers a floral fantasy. (I am sure they need to swap them out often- like corporate plantings) Take a look at Dubai day to day and think how clean and bright that garden looks.... When I taught English in China and I was teaching the word exotic- guess which country was the most "exotic" to my students? Sweden. It's all in perspective.

Well it may be a flower garden, but I might take issue with the word "natural". Nothing natural at all about flowers growing like that anywhere, let alone the desert. I'm not crazy about formal gardens anyway, Dubai-ese, English, American, doesn't matter.

Interesting. Modernist? Certainly not a lazy garden. Good for them.

Looks like something out of a Dr. Suess book lol

But I could take an Art Deco garden as a Curious George garden, if that's my frame of reference.

Tacky, irrelevant, pointless, dull - wrong on so many levels.

Crazy... It sounds like they use all reclaimed waste water and the display is completely changed out each year.... Also "natural" just refers to the fact they are real plants and not plastic or whatever, like the rose bowl parade floats I guess (I think they're supposed to be 100% natural coverings too) I'm going to pass on a visit. I bet there are a ton of other things to do there anyway. It's full of "plant material" but I don't think it would interest me for more than a couple minutes and a few pictures under the arch or in front of the flower wall. I can imagine this would be the place to see a blue rose or black orchid or something. Maybe that's going to be phase 2! |

.....So far Dubai has not been on my list of places to visit, and this keeps it off the list. They are pretty loose with the word "natural". Just looking at it makes me feel like I fell through a hole in a tree. Are they all the same flowers just different colors? Great for Dubai though, they probably love it since there is so little green there, and it certainly is....new.
RE: World's Largest Flower Garden - in Dubai ???
| | |
Yes it's...different. Lol! I was thinking that if you lived in the middle of the desert, and never traveled far, you would never see what a real forest looked like (except in photos of course), or a landscape that received regular rainfall and was green most of the time (like New England in the warm season). Perhaps this is what one desires a garden to be when one looks at sand all day, cuz I know my mind would be going a little crazy if I had to...
RE: World's Largest Flower Garden - in Dubai ???

They are not looking at sand all day - they are looking at building sites! Encapsulated in one image - everything which is wrong in a super-consumerised artificial bubble of excess wealth and tasteless glittering follies. Not just grim, but obscenely so.

Here is a video series - a young Chinese couple touring a large number of Arabic cities in the area: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNjI1NTkwOTk2.html In case you don't understand Chinese, the mosque at 6 minutes contains 26 ton of gold as decoration!

I have been to Dubai twice for very short visits. Did not know about this garden but the interpretation they have chosen fits right in with the other outlandish things one can see in and around the city.

How is it that MANKIND can make beautiful flowers look so ugly? Daisy |

Jujujojo--- I don't understand a word of Chinese but really enjoyed the video of those two excited and vibrant young people exploring a new culture. (I'm guessing that's a travel show/video?) Loved Jason's expressions as he ate --- especially the lobster--- and his eyes rolled back in his head! Molie
